As we approach Christmas,my thoughts are drawn to the reason for the season.I’m not going to get on my soapbox and preach to you all,but I’m not going to sidestep the issue either.
First of all,It’s called Christmas for a reason.Christ-mass.We celebrate the birth of Christ. You don’t have to believe in Christ as The Savior to appreciate the man.Even if you think it’s all a fairy tale, there is still beauty to the story of his life and teachings.
When asked what is the greatest commandment in the Law,he answered “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it:Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (Matthew 22,34-40)
Commanded to love.Love your God.Love your neighbor as you love yourself.
Notice the order. You are not first. At best, you’re tied for second. At worst,YOU come last.
Selfless love.Sacrificial love.
The reason for the season.Love incarnate.A life overflowing with love, selfless love,to the point of sacrifice. The ultimate sacrifice.Paid in innocent blood.
Sacrifice for YOU.
Sacrifice for ALL mankind.
That we might live.
Let us all strive to emulate that example.
